If you have a roof leak — or even think it might be a leak from your roof — the first thing to do is call Legend Roofs.
Below is a list of common problems to check before a roofing service technician comes out. Around 50% of roof leak callbacks are unrelated to the roofing system. Checking these items first can save you a service call fee.
If Legend Roofs makes a service call and the leak is not related to the roofing system installed by Legend Roofs, there will be a $125.00 service fee. If we can make the repair, a fee will be discussed before work begins.

Common Roof Leak Issues to Check First
A/C Pan Overflow in the Attic
The A/C overflow pan and A/C lines in the attic are one of the most common problems seen on a roof leak callback. Go into your attic and check if the pan under the A/C unit is full of water. If so, call an air conditioning repair company immediately. Quick tip: once a month, open the cap to your overflow line and put a full cap of Clorox bleach in the line to kill algae and help prevent clogging.
Gutters and Downspouts Clogged with Debris
Everything from tennis balls to leaves and pine straw can clog downspouts and fill gutters to the point they overflow. When clogged, water flows backward under the shingles, making it appear you have a roof leak. Check your gutters and downspouts to be sure they are free of debris. Have your roof and gutters cleaned at least once a year through our maintenance program.
Cracked Bricks and Mortar in the Chimney
Cracked bricks and old mortar are very common problems that mimic a roof leak. Over time, chimneys must be maintained — the mortar may need to be redone or you may get by with waterproofing the chimney. If the leak is near or around your chimney, be prepared for a service call fee and repair bill.
Chimney Cap Cracked and Leaky
Older chimney caps must be replaced from time to time. This is a maintenance issue that is not related to the roofing system. If it is not safe to inspect your roof and chimney, never do so — call a roofing professional.
Stucco Around Chimney and Wall
Stucco over time develops cracks that allow water to enter the home. Stucco around chimneys and sidewalls is very prone to leak water when aged. This is another problem that may look like a roof leak but isn’t.
Brick Wall Pulling Away from Home
Over time, homes settle and outer walls can literally pull away from the main structure, allowing water to enter. If you see your outer wall separating from the main structure, this is most likely the cause of your leak, not your roof.
Skylights Are Notorious for Leaking
Older skylights are very prone to leak around the frame and glass. Sometimes leaks can be repaired, but it’s often best to just replace the skylight. Legend Roofs only installs Velux Skylights because they have the best warranty in the industry. You may even be entitled to a federal tax rebate when installing a Velux fresh air skylight.
Water Heater
Another common problem mistaken for a roof leak is the water heater. You’ll normally get five to fifteen years from a water heater, but they can go bad at any time. If your water heater is in your attic, check the overflow pan for water before assuming it’s a roof leak. If leaking, turn the water off immediately and call a plumber.
