Common Roof Problems

How can a homeowner recognize when a roofing system has problems?

Usually, roof problems are discovered only after serious damage. Having your roof inspected twice a year can uncover cracked, warped, or missing shingles; loose seams and deteriorated flashings; excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts; and other visible signs of problems.

What causes roofing damage?

Multiple factors damage your roof over time: Sun — heat and UV rays cause roofing materials to deteriorate over time. Rain — water works its way under shingles and into the roof deck causing rot. Wind — high winds can lift shingles and expose the underlying structure. Snow and ice — melting and refreezing can cause ice dams that force water under shingles. Condensation — moisture buildup in the attic promotes rot and mold. Moss and algae — these retain moisture against the roof surface. Trees and leaves — branches can scrape and gouge roofing materials, and leaves can clog gutters.

What signs of roof leak damage should I look for?

Look for water stains or discoloration on ceilings and walls, peeling paint or wallpaper near the roofline, damp spots alongside fireplaces, and mold or mildew growth in the attic. On the exterior, look for missing, cracked, or curled shingles; damaged flashing; and excessive granules in your gutters.

Storm & Hail Damage Questions

How do I know if I have hail damage?

Hail damage can be difficult to spot from the ground. Look for dents in metal flashing, gutters, or downspouts. On the roof, hail damage shows as dark spots where granules have been knocked off, exposing the asphalt or fiberglass mat underneath. If your area has experienced a hailstorm, call Legend Roofs for a free inspection.

Should I file an insurance claim for storm damage?

If you suspect storm damage, it’s worth having a professional inspection. Legend Roofs can assess the damage and help you determine if an insurance claim is warranted. We have dedicated team members experienced in working with insurance companies.

What should I do after a major storm?

Document any visible damage with photos. Cover any active leaks temporarily with a tarp if safe to do so. Contact your insurance company and then call Legend Roofs to schedule a professional inspection. Do not attempt to climb on your roof yourself.

New Roof & Replacement Questions

What will a new roof system cost?

The price of a new roof varies depending on materials selected, the home or building, location, local labor rates, and the time of year. Price is only one factor — the quality of materials and workmanship must also be considered. For each roofing material, there are different grades and corresponding prices as well as a variety of styles and shapes. Contact Legend Roofs for a free estimate.

How long can I expect my roof system to last?

The actual lifespan of your roof is determined by local climate, proper building and roof system design, material quality, proper application, and adequate roof maintenance. Owens Corning architectural shingles come with warranties ranging from 25 years to limited lifetime depending on the product line.

Could I just repair the leak myself?

It’s vitally important that installation and repairs are performed by experienced professionals. A professional roofing contractor is trained to safely and efficiently repair or replace your roof. By using improper techniques, you’re likely to damage your roof system or seriously injure yourself.

We haven’t had any leaks. Does that mean I don’t need a roofing contractor?

Just because you haven’t seen any leaks doesn’t mean your roof doesn’t need care. Many problems develop silently — deteriorating flashing, failing seals around pipe jacks, granule loss, and moss or algae growth can all reduce your roof’s lifespan without causing immediate leaks. We recommend inspections at least every five years.

Questions After a New Roof Installation

My shingles don’t lay flat on my entire roof — is that normal?

Yes, this is completely normal. New shingles need time to thermally seal. The adhesive strip on each shingle activates with heat from the sun, causing shingles to bond flat to each other. This process typically takes a few warm days. Owens Corning Tru-Def Duration shingles are designed to lay beautifully once the thermal seal activates.

Some of the hip and ridge shingles look lifted up — is that a problem?

Just like field shingles, hip and ridge shingles need time to thermally seal. They will lay down flat once exposed to adequate warmth. This is perfectly normal.

I see something shiny at the top of my roof on a sunny day — what is it?

That’s most likely the VentSure ridge vent by Owens Corning. The ridge vent has a thin, low-profile design that sits along the peak of your roof. On sunny days, it can appear shiny. This is normal and indicates proper ventilation is installed.

Do I need to do any maintenance on my roof after installation?

Yes. You should have your roof inspected at least every five years to make sure seals, flashings, pipe boots, and sealants are all in good shape. Consider enrolling in our residential roof maintenance program for annual professional inspections.
